Brothers - Kappa Alpha Psi
The one and only fraternity for me is Kappa Alpha Psi Incorporated. Founded at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana (January 5th, 1911), and being the first fraternity founded outside of Howard University, they led the way in manliness and fidelity which would eventually bring the glitter of the diamond to the world.
With time they spread from the Midwest through the east and a chapter in the west (Upsilon U Chapter 1923). From this chapter, my chapter took root at the University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University, and Pepperdine University. Beta Omega (BW) Chapter was founded July 2nd, 1947 and began life as the second chapter in the Western Province.
Also if you are on the west coast, check out the California Kappa Beach Party. I went to the first one and from the pictures, it has gotten better and better each year. If you just can't make it to the one in Texas (which is off the hook too), this one is getting just as good.
Sisters - Kappa Sweethearts
Kappa Sweethearts are the first and only group of women affiliated with Kappa Alpha Psi in a Sister like manner. The exact date of beginnings of this group of women is steeped in mystery, but of one fact fraternal history is clear.
These women did exist and for better or worse, depending on your point of view, they were many times a integral part of the growth and proliferation of the ideas of the fraternity.
Sorors - Sigma Gamma Rho
Sigma Gamma Rho is a true sorority in their own right. Having said that, many "coincidences" exist to fully deny any connection to their existence. My personal belief, even though there is no "official" record of any involvement of the founders of Kappa Alpha Psi, is that Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a "sister like" organization to Kappa Alpha Psi.
Again let me state that there is no official connection to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (and my statements may anger some people) and no historical records of there being any contact between the Founders of Kappa Alpha Psi and the Founders of Sigma Gamma Rho.
However do to many "coincidences" I have discovered, I feel that this is a valid statement to assume, at least on a surface level, since they are the only two organizations that are without a sister and brother type of connection.

While I will be focusing on the three groups
of men and women above, there is to be sure some connection
to other organizations which I have not covered on my site.
If you need more information about them or are wanting help
to understand more about
African American Greek Letter Organizations, please
check out the links below or locate the nearest college or
alumni chapter and contact members directly. |
