Rockefeller at a church conference in Ohio.[1]

In 1883, the school relocated to a nine acre (36,000 m²) site in Atlanta relatively close to the church they began in, which originally had only five buildings to support classroom and residence hall needs. The school was able to survive on generous donations by the black community in Atlanta, the efforts of volunteer teachers, and gifts of supplies.

In April 1884, Rockefeller visited the school and decided that he liked what he saw, so he settled the debt on the property. The name of the school was changed to the Spelman Seminary in honor of Laura Spelman, an Oread student and wife of John D. Rockefeller[1] who helped to fund the school, and her parents who were longtime activists in the anti-slavery movement. Rockefeller's gift precipitated interest from other benefactors

Spelman College - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Get Your Census Form In!!!

Make sure you are counted!!!

It looks like your browser cannot or does not support IFRAMES.

Kappa is more than a ritual or secret…

Over the past days I have reflected on many things I learned and was taught over the years. Many times I keep drifting back to my early years in Kappa Alpha Psi. Some of the things I was taught are summed up below.

Most of my feelings and the quality to which I was taught are summed up in the article in the Kappa Journal* (February 2010 - pg. 54) and the article is titled "Who Taught You to Guard the Secret Kappa Valut?"

In it Brother George Chavis says the following (only excerpts printed for copyright and length reasons):

When it comes to [just] revealing our secrets, I'm definitely against that...

A good brother said to me: 'I could care less if an outsider knows what Phi Nu Pi is-- I understand it, I live it, and I know what it means to thousands of good brothers who have gone before me, and to thousands of brothers with whom I share it.'...

It shouldn't be what we KNOW, but what we DO that defines us...

Clearly, knowing the translation of 'Phi Nu Pi' does not make you a Kappa, neither does understanding its meaning...

does the possession of this knowledge make anyone a Kappa in the sense intended by our revered Founders? And what about the thousands of us who faithfully discharge our oaths and regularly sustain the fraternity and its goals--does our knowledge of the translation and understanding of Phi Nu Pi alone make us Kappas?

I say it does not...

The "knowing" is not the end, it is the "doing" and the "being" of "Phi Nu Pi" that makes us Kappas. If every person in the world knew the definition of "Phi Nu Pi," it wouldn't interfere with "... who we are, and what we do..." And, if by their knowing, the world acted upon that knowledge as we do, that that's all the better for the world and Kappa Alpha Psi.

So to all those who hate on us and to those who look upon us with disrespect think of it like this.

What are YOU doing to change this world?

What are you doing to leave a better legacy to the next generation?

Are you just surviving through life or are you taking steps to change the world for the better?

Those are some of the things Kappa Alpha Psi stands for. Those are the things we try to achieve. And those are the things that, when you really look at it, really matter.

*the Kappa Journal is published by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated. It was neat to talk to people in Ohio and see what they were feeling about Obama. It was also interesting to see that in a state he is not scheduled or predicted to win, there were so many people moved enough to work and call and volunteer. From high school students all the way up to a 98 year old woman; they were all contributing and giving what they could to the campaign.

It really makes me wonder why more people have not gotten behind a candidate before.

We all know the real reason for that. It takes a candidate of a generation. Someone with unusual attraction for al people cause people like me to get involved.

It is beyond him being black. It goes beyond my dislike of GW. I was one of those people who had great respect for John McCain. I was one who thought that finally we would have an honest campaign about issues where I could decide based on intelligent discussion. A conversation that I have dreamed of for a long time.

The funny thing is that I never thought the conversation would be so one sided. I never thought a campaign would move me to donate, money or my time. Now we have a choice. It has moved me to act and take a side. Tomorrow we decide who will lead the US for the next 4 years (hopefully if he is successful 8 years); take the time to really think about what has happened and what we face.

In my live as a student, as a man of Kappa Alpha Psi, as an educated man who loves history, and as a person who loves this country; I have never wanted so badly for someone to win the presidency. I understand the history of what this means (My mother is a child of the 1960’s), I also know that it could not have happened if the bridge between people, and the involvement of all the volunteers and staff hadn’t happened.

To all the people that have donated money and time, Thank You for your work on behalf of a majority of the country.

Now let’s close the deal!!! Let’s win it tomorrow!!!

YouTube - Charles Meets Barack

Barack Obama is bringing out our living history…

Never forget the LIVING history around us...

Where is America today?

This makes me sad... :-(

Shed a tear for the American consciousness.
